What is group buying?
Group buying is simple: people who want the same thing, in the same place, join one group before a closing date - and the group, not each person alone, deals with the seller.
The idea in one minute
A single buyer has little to offer a seller beyond one purchase. A group of buyers offers a known quantity, committed in advance. That is a different conversation: the seller can plan stock, delivery and time around one larger order instead of many small ones.
Group buying is the habit of turning scattered demand into one visible request, and asking for terms that suit a group.
How it differs from a sale or a discount coupon
A sale is the seller's idea, at the seller's price, for everybody. A group is the buyers' idea: the need comes first, the group forms around it, and the price is discussed after there are people behind the request.
Nothing is guaranteed by the format itself. What a group gets depends on how many join, how clear the requirement is, and what the seller agrees to.
Who it suits
It suits purchases that are large, infrequent or the same for many people - a vehicle in a particular city, a flat in a particular project, a trade requirement that several businesses share. It suits less well a one-off item nobody else wants.
How it works on Subharambh
Someone posts a requirement with the item, the quantity, the location and a join-by date. Buyers with the same need sign in and join before that date. When the date arrives, the group negotiates as one. While a group is still growing, nobody pays.
Questions
Is group buying the same as bulk buying?
They overlap. Bulk buying is one buyer purchasing a large quantity; group buying is many buyers combining into that large quantity. See the guide on group buying versus bulk buying.
Do I have to pay to join a group?
Not while the group is still growing. Joining records that you want to take part before the join-by date.
Is a better price guaranteed?
No. A group improves your position in the conversation; the outcome depends on the size of the group and the seller.
